schedule
Phasing FP1: Fall 2013
Research Phase I: Topic/Formal Research
Powers of Ten SynthEco(micro/macro)System
Goal:
Produce a film of 5 min that identifies and unpacks the scales of 3 interrelated Bodies/Species you will design.
Step 1: Research Documents: Cultural and material systems regarding possible intersections between material and media innovations and their applicability to architecture design and terreforming potential.
Step 2: Assemblage Potential Diagram: Identification and selection of innovative connections/processes across material, cultural, social or other types of systems. Depiction of scales that characterize those processes.
Selection of 3 main scales/bodies of interest.
Step 3: Film: Production of film (5 mins) that explores relationships between the 3 main scales/bodies of ‘step 2’, including other larger contexts they connect with.
Fields of Research:
Architecture and material invention
Architecture typological innovation
– Biotech
Nanotechnology/Nanoculture
Micro and Macrorobotics
Media and Networks
Geotagging
Themes:
systems of inhabitation
systems of life-support
systems of transportation
systems of action extension/remote control
systems of energy generation
DUE: September 25th/27th (pin-up/internal review)

Research Phase II: Site Selection and Analysis
Goal:
Produce documents that characterize contexts of scales/bodies to be developed.
Step 1: Research Applicability to Contexts: Diagram/document existing and extrapolative conditions of deployment of the technologies, artifacts and concepts explored in Phase 1.
Step 2: Define and Characterize Contexts: Document Contexts defined in 1. by depicting their locations, characteristics and factors delimiting their environmental behavior.
Step 3: Select and Depict Implementation Areas: Document Zones and Factors involved in the implementation of proposal (s). Create scenarios in space and time that explore potentials of the implementation of the proposal.
Fields of Research:
. Earth Ecosystem/site
. Other Celestial Planets
. Infrastructure
. Urban Zones
. Forest Patches
. Geological layer
DUE: October 16th/18th MIDTERM review

Design Phase I: Schematic Proposal: BODY 1
Goal:
– Identify and Design Body 1
Step 1: Identify and Characterize Body 1: diagrams relating Body 1 to context of insertion.
Step 2: Define factors influencing design of Body 1: diagrams of relationship between context/concept factors and operability of Body 1 ‘parts’.
Step 3: Define Body 1 as Network: diagrams of connection between context and Body 1 ‘parts’/materials.
Step 4: Assemble Body 1 as Network Node: model of body/exchange.
DUE: November 20th/22nd FINAL review

Phasing FP2: Spring 2014
Design Phase II: Design Development: BODY 2 , BODY 3
Step 1: Define factors influencing design of Body 2 and 3
Step 2: Define Body 2 and 3 as Networks
Step 3: Assemble Body 1, 2 and 3 as Network Nodes
Production Phase I: Physical Models
Goal:
– Design and produce final total and partial physical models of the overall proposal and its 3 bodies.
Production Phase 2: Drawings and Renderings
Goal:
Design and produce final total and partial drawings and renderings at different scales of the overall proposal and its 3 bodies, including drawings of extrapolative scenarios of use (scenario testing).
Scenario testing:
a) Define scenarios of play and response for Bodies to work together
b) Define limit contexts
c) Extrapolate on higher and lower order bodies to add to assemblages
